Well here we are, a painful, undertaking, two weeks later. After many re-writes, drafts, and dodged questions about why Jennifer Lopez managed to make this list, it is indeed time for my top fifteen songs of 2012.
I won’t bore you with more pointless words about how 2012 was a great year in terms of music (it was) or how I’m anxious to see what 2013 brings (I am), but I’ll leave you with the knowledge that these fifteen selections, for the most part, clogged up my Last.fm, most likely ostracized my roommate with my incessant use of the replay button, and had me proclaim that I was in fact, “screaming.”
Because one part just isn’t enough.
Reading this, I’m assuming you’re back for part two of my Best Music of 2012 series, and for that I would first like to say ‘thank you,’ that meaning ‘thank you for sticking by me because I honestly didn’t think I’d make it to a third post.’ This installment will include singles #30-#16 because what’s a best of list without some dramatic effect? However this installment boasts ‘insider commentary’ on each of my selections, that’s just because of my deep appreciation to my craft (if my constant praise of Christina Aguilera’s Bionic wasn’t enough to confirm that) because I am a true ‘music journalist.’
(There are also little pictures of each artist attached, so yeah, that’s fun too.)
If you know me you know that I am head over heels for a good list. I am particularly fond of lists about music, and more particularly than that, I am fond of lists that are about good music. Year-end lists are my favorite, however. They combine a whole year’s worth of music into something short, snappy, and very aesthetically pleasing.
I’m kicking things off with the bottom half (er, 70%) of my songs of 2012 list. After my failed attempt at publishing my ‘top singles of 2011’ list (the top 20 are out there somewhere), I decided to actually, you know, put some work into it and it came out quite alright. It nearly killed me for an entire year, but it’s done. Editing and dragging and adding and deleting files off of an iTunes playlist all year because you’re having an crisis when you can’t decide whether a song is ‘great’ or simply a ‘song that you love’ is some tough work that will sooner or later land me in therapy.
No commentary will be provided for this first installent, mostly because I didn’t have any prepared and I would prefer not to delay this any more than I’ve already been putting it off. Also, feedback would be lovely. If you agree or disagree, I don’t care, just leave some feedback. But honestly, I’m always right and all of these songs are pretty super great.
So without further ado…
